Call for Scores - Now Open

CallforScoresflyerPNG.png

The Area 9 Quartet is excited to launch our inaugural call for scores, "New England Soundscapes: Little Brewster Island."

Inspired by our commitment to the New England composition community, Area 9 seeks to explore the rich and diverse history of the region through a 21st century lens.

Little Brewster Island is famous for Boston Light, the nation's oldest continually used lighthouse site, first lit in 1716. After being destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War, it was rebuilt in 1783. The tower was enlarged in 1859, and in the last 20th century, preservation efforts led to it becoming the last U.S. lighthouse to remain permanently manned by a civilian keeper. The island now serves as a national historic landmark, with the Coast Guard still on site to record meteorological data and maintain the lighthouse.

The selected work will be performed and premiered in the Fall 2026 season opening concert, and will be performed in two additional concerts in the same concert season. It is our hope that the Call for Scores winner will be available to attend at least one performance.  The winning composer will receive a $1,500 prize.
