John Rabinowitz
Tenor Saxophone

John studied classical saxophone with Ken Radnofsky at the Longy School and the New England Conservatory, and jazz performance with Mark Phaneuf at the New School of Music in Cambridge, MA.

In addition to being a founding member of Area 9, John is also a member of, and soloist with, The Concord Band, a symphonic concert band that was the recipient of the 2013 Sudler Silver Scroll, the most prestigious award for community bands in the United States. John currently serves on the Band’s Board of Trustees. He is also a frequent guest artist with the New England Conservatory Saxophone Ensemble, and is a soloist with Les Messengers de la Nouvelle Alliance, a Boston based Haitian reggae gospel band that performs throughout eastern Massachusetts.

In 2017, as a member of the board of trustees of the Boston Woodwind Society, John co-sponsored a series of saxophone master classes for the benefit of students at the New England Conservatory and Boston University. Featured artists participating in the program included Greg Ridlington, Nate Jorgensen, Lars Mlekusch, Doug O’Connor and Jonathon Hulting-Cohen.

John earned a BA in American History from Harvard College in 1985, and studied classical piano at the Longy School with Betty Roberts, Elise Jackendoff and Lyubov Schlain. He currently resides in Arlington, MA.
